Ukraine Will Receive 200 Marta Self-Propelled Artillery Systems on Zetros Chassis in 2027

Ukraine will receive 200 Marta self-propelled artillery systems (SPGs) in 2027 on the Mercedes-Benz Zetros chassis, ordered by Germany.

A representative of the Kramatorsk Heavy Machine-Building Plant (KZVV) spoke about this in an interview with the publication Oboronka.

A production agreement worth €750 million was signed in late 2025. The self-propelled artillery systems will be manufactured on German chassis supplied to Ukraine as part of military aid.

According to the representative, the new self-propelled howitzer is intended to “replace all Western 155 mm short-barreled artillery,” since Western systems are currently “impossible to maintain properly, and doing so is very expensive.”

It is also intended to replace the remaining less-accurate and shorter-range Soviet systems of 122 mm and 152 mm calibers. At the same time, he did not specify whether this refers only to the replacement of Western and Soviet self-propelled artillery or to all artillery in general.

“This project is currently in the implementation phase. The vehicles will be delivered in 2027. It was very difficult, because lobbying hasn’t gone away, and there were companies in Germany that wanted to supply these howitzers on their own. We overcame many Ukrainian and international obstacles to get this agreement signed. The simplicity of our howitzer, its affordable price, and mass production helped,” he said.

Marta self-propelled artillery system

Plans to create the Bohdana self-propelled artillery system with a short 39-caliber barrel first came to light in September 2024.

At that time, Polish journalist Mariusz Marszałkowski of Defence24 also reported on this, and sources at Militarnyi confirmed this information.

Security officials confirmed to Militarnyi at the time that there was interest in such a self-propelled gun specifically to obtain a brigade-level firepower asset.

At the time, the chassis options under consideration were the German MAN or the Korean Daewoo, both of which Ukraine received as part of international technical assistance.

In addition to the self-propelled version, a towed version of the Marta is also under development, which entered testing in late 2025. This was reported at the time by Colonel Andrii Zhuravlev, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Missile Forces and Artillery Command of the Ukrainian Ground Forces.

The 39-caliber barrel will allow the gun to be mounted on a lighter carriage and transported using smaller vehicles than the Bohdana-BG howitzer.
