A new stage of testing of the unmanned tiltrotor R6000 has been recorded in China, with the aircraft performing its first flight without safety tethers used in earlier trials.

The footage was published by WenJian0922 on X.

The video, which first appeared on Chinese social media, shows the aircraft in vertical flight, performing a yaw rotation in hover mode, as well as sustained horizontal flight.

Previously available materials were limited to tethered tests, which demonstrated only the basic capabilities of vertical takeoff, landing, and hover.

Although details of the current test program have not been disclosed, stable flight without safety systems is a key milestone for any tiltrotor program.

This is due to the aerodynamic complexity of the configuration and the need to ensure reliable control during transitions between flight modes.

The R6000 may be particularly useful for supplying Chinese island bases in the South China Sea, as well as remote garrisons in the Pacific region and border areas where traditional airfield infrastructure is limited.

In addition, the tiltrotor UAV platform is potentially suited for operations from Type 076 amphibious assault ships and other large PLA Navy landing platforms, expanding their logistics and transport capabilities.

In the future, the R6000 may be adapted for crewed operation and used for troop transport.

Testing of the system was first reported last year.

R6000

The R6000 (Lanying R6000) is an unmanned tiltrotor with a maximum takeoff weight of 6.1 tonnes, developed by Chinese company United Aircraft. The system combines vertical takeoff and landing capability, typical of helicopters, with fixed-wing aircraft cruise speed, enabling long-range transport without the need for runways.

According to the developer, the R6000 has a maximum payload of 2 tonnes, a cruising speed of up to 550 km/h, a maximum range of up to 4,000 km, and a combat radius of up to 1,500 km. The service ceiling is 7,620 meters, and the cargo compartment volume is 7.6 m³.

The manufacturer highlights high payload capacity, long range, and autonomous operation capability among its advantages. The tiltrotor does not require prepared airfields and can operate in areas with difficult terrain, including islands and mountainous regions.

The R6000 is positioned as a multi-role platform. In the civilian sector, it can be used to transport 6 to 12 passengers, conduct medical evacuation, search and rescue missions, and transport logistics. For medical missions, it can carry up to four wounded and four medical personnel, while in cargo configuration, it can transport up to two tonnes of freight.

The platform is also said to be capable of operating in adverse weather conditions. It is equipped with anti-icing and lightning protection systems, can withstand winds up to Beaufort scale 8, and can continue flying during moderate rain and for one to two hours in heavy rain.
