Spain Will Continue to Supply Ukraine with Missiles for the Patriot System

Spain will continue supplying Ukraine with missiles for the Patriot air defense missile system as part of its military aid.

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares announced this while answering questions from journalists during an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Ireland.

In recent months, Ukraine has been calling on its allies to increase ammunition supplies for these systems, which play a particularly important role in intercepting ballistic missiles.

“We have been doing this for a long time and will continue to do so,” Albares said.

The day before, on September 2, Albares met with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha on the sidelines of an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Wicklow.

During the talks, the parties discussed support for Ukraine, the protection of civilians, and critical infrastructure. Albares confirmed Madrid’s continued support for Ukraine and an increase in missile deliveries.

Spain has already supplied Ukraine with Patriot interceptor missiles. In April 2024, Madrid announced the delivery of a batch of such missiles for Ukrainian systems, and in May of that same year, the Spanish Ministry of Defense reported that it was preparing a new batch.

On August 24, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the country is among the founding members of the new Coalition for Ukraine’s Ballistic Missile Defense. Its goal is to strengthen the protection of Ukrainian territory against missile threats, which also pose a risk to European security.

Spain is also participating in the training of Ukrainian military personnel to operate the Patriot system. Specifically, Spanish military personnel are training Ukrainian specialists to maintain these systems as part of the EU mission EUMAM-Ukraine.

Militarnyi previously reported that the American company Raytheon, a subsidiary of RTX, signed a $1.7 billion contract with the Spanish government.

The agreement calls for the delivery of radars, launchers, command posts, and control stations, as well as training equipment for the Patriot systems.

The Spanish company Sener is also involved in producing certain system components. It produces the GEM-T electromechanical missile control system, which is part of the global Patriot supply chain.
