Airbus is modifying its A400M Atlas military transport aircraft to serve as an airborne launch platform for drones.
The announcement was made at the Paris Air Show, where the European aerospace firm unveiled future concepts for expanding the aircraft’s operational roles.
One proposed configuration would allow the A400M Atlas to act as both a launch vehicle for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and a control center for drone operations.
Thanks to its payload capacity and range, A400M Atlas could deploy up to 50 small drones or 12 larger UAVs in a single mission.
Airbus Defence and Space emphasized that unmanned systems are already a core component of modern military operations and are expected to play an increasingly critical role in joint missions with crewed aircraft.
In late 2022, Airbus SE, in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Defence of Germany and the German Aerospace Center (DLR), successfully conducted the world’s first airborne launch of a drone from an A400M Atlas as part of the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program.
The launch system used in the test was developed in just six months.
