Edgewing has been awarded a multibillion-dollar contract to develop a sixth-generation fighter jet.
The British-Italian-Japanese company announced that it had secured an 18-month contract worth £4.6 billion (approximately $6.1 billion).
The agreement was signed as part of a joint program to develop a new-generation fighter jet.
The contract was signed as part of the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP).
This will enable the completion of the advanced development and concept evaluation phase for the next-generation fighter jet, after which the project will move on to the detailed design and engineering phase.
This is the second international contract that Edgewing has secured under the GCAP program.
The company received its first contract, worth £686 million, in April.
Edgewing is a joint venture between the British company BAE Systems, the Italian company Leonardo, and the Japanese company JAIEC.
Rolls-Royce, IHI Corporation, and other leading manufacturers are also participating in the engine’s development.
The GCAP program was launched in 2022 with the goal of creating a new-generation stealth fighter jet using cutting-edge technologies.
“The aircraft is expected to be delivered by 2035 and will be equipped with the capabilities necessary to ensure superiority in the most challenging combat conditions,” the company said.
Although the fighter jet will be a joint development among the three countries, each country’s version of the aircraft will be equipped with different radar systems, equipment, and missile and bomb armaments.
