Five Additional F-35 Fighter Jets Arrive in Poland

Five more fifth-generation F-35A Husarz fighter jets have arrived in Poland, bolstering the country’s Air Force fleet.

This was announced by Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces.

The aircraft, with tail numbers 3512, 3513, 3514, 3515, and 3516, landed on August 28 at the 32nd Tactical Air Base in Łask. Prior to this, the country had already received three aircraft.

The history of the procurement of these aircraft began in May 2019, when the Polish Ministry of National Defence sent an official request to the United States regarding the purchase of 32 F-35A fighter jets under the Harpia program.

In September 2019, the U.S. Department of State approved the potential sale of fighter jets and related equipment for an estimated $6.5 billion.

The official contract for the delivery of 32 F-35A Lightning II fighter jets was signed on January 31, 2020, at the Dęblin Military Air Base, with a final value of $4.6 billion.

The agreement covers the delivery of Block 4 aircraft, training and simulation equipment, spare engines, technical support, and training for Polish pilots and ground crew in the United States.

The first F-35A fighter jet for the Polish Air Force was unveiled at the Lockheed Martin plant in Fort Worth, Texas, in August 2024.

At that time, the Polish aircraft were officially given the national designation ‘Husarz,’ chosen in honor of the historic Polish cavalry—the winged hussars.

Overall, the agreement calls for equipping two squadrons of the Polish Air Force, which will allow for the gradual phasing out and replacement of the aging Soviet MiG-29 fighters and Su-22 ground-attack aircraft.

As a reminder, the United States has completed assembly of the final F-35A Husarz fighter jet for the Polish Air Force.

Subsequent aircraft will be manufactured in Italy. This assembly line is managed by Leonardo in partnership with Lockheed Martin.
