US forces launched a series of strikes in southern Iran near the Strait of Hormuz.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) described the strikes as “defensive,” according to Reuters.
The targets included boats that were laying naval mines and missile launchers positioned along the coast.
“US Central Command continues to protect our forces while showing restraint under the ongoing ceasefire,” CENTCOM spokesperson Tim Hawkins said.
The night before, Iranian media reported explosions in the cities of Bandar Abbas, Bandar Sirik, and Jask, all located along the Strait of Hormuz.
The incident comes amid a ceasefire that has been in place since early April.
The United States and Iran agreed to a ceasefire on April 7. During ongoing negotiations, Washington has insisted that Iran export its enriched uranium and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route, while Tehran is demanding that the blockade on its ports be lifted.
