The U.S. government removed from office one of its top generals, who was responsible for military operations in Europe.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Defense announced the dismissal of Lieutenant General Charles Costanza, commander of the U.S. Army’s V Corps, according to ABC News.

The reasons and circumstances behind the general’s sudden removal from office remain unknown at this time.

Costanza left his post nearly two months before his term was set to officially end.

The U.S. Army’s V Corps plays a key role in coordinating U.S. aid to Ukraine following the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

In addition to assisting Ukraine, the unit is responsible for managing the U.S. military presence along NATO’s eastern flank.

Part of the V Corps is deployed in Poland, where the unit provides operational command of U.S. forces in the region.

Costanza was removed amid a shake-up at the department led by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

A source at ABC News familiar with the situation notes that Costanza’s dismissal is not related to Hegseth’s policies or sweeping personnel changes.

Costanza is to be replaced by Major General Thomas Felt, whose nomination has already been confirmed by the Senate for a scheduled change of command in October.

Brigadier General John B. Mountford has been appointed acting commander of the V Corps.

Charles Costanza has led the V Corps since April 2024, and prior to that, he commanded the 3rd Infantry Division in Georgia.
