Ukraine’s Defense Forces Destroy Russian Starlink-Jamming Electronic Warfare System in Gelendzhik

Satellite imagery has revealed that Ukraine’s Defense Forces destroyed a Russian Volna Kupol Garant electronic warfare system, designed to jam Starlink satellite communications, in Gelendzhik, Russia.

The imagery was published by the Dnipro OSINT community.

The system generates targeted radio interference at satellites, preventing them from receiving signals from ground terminals. According to researchers, this is the third documented destruction of a system of this type recorded in open sources.

Judging by the imagery, the system was hit at Military Unit 2156, the Novorossiysk Border Detachment (32nd Border Guard Detachment) of the Russian Federal Security Service’s Border Service.

The attack likely occurred at the same time as the attack on cargo vessels near Novorossiysk and Gelendzhik on August 7.

During an attack in the Gelendzhik area on August 8, a second strike on the territory of Military Unit 2156 likely occurred, judging by the geolocation of photographs posted by local residents.

Volna Kupol Garant Electronic Warfare System

The system consists of trailers equipped with several satellite antennas. The installation tracks satellites as they pass overhead and transmits a powerful signal that disrupts Starlink terminal communications over an area of up to 20 square kilometers.

According to its specifications, the system operates in the 14-14.5 GHz frequency range and can jam communications at a distance of up to 16 kilometers.

The system can operate across a 360-degree azimuth and 110-degree elevation sector, while its total weight is 120 kilograms.

The system is manufactured by a company of the same name registered in Simferopol. The cost of a single system is 150 million rubles, or about $1.8 million.

Similar systems have previously been destroyed by the 422nd Unmanned Systems Regiment and the Security Service of Ukraine’s Special Operations Center “A,” as well as other Ukrainian Defense Forces units, including in temporarily occupied Crimea.

The developer is also known for the Volna 3M electronic warfare system, designed to suppress satellite navigation signals used by drones and installed by Russian forces on Mi-8AMTSh multirole helicopters.
