Russia Deploys New Volna Kupol Garant EW Systems to Jam Starlink, Ukraine Already Destroying Them

The Russian invading forces have deployed the electronic warfare means Volna-Kupol-Garant to counter the Starlink satellite communication system.

Serhiy Beskrestnov (callsign “Flash”), the adviser to the Minister of Defense, reported this to BBC News Ukraine.

The system consists of trailers equipped with two satellite antennas. The system tracks the satellite’s position and emits a powerful signal that destabilizes Starlink terminal communications over an area of up to 20 square kilometers.

According to the characteristics, the system operates in the frequency range from 14 to 14.5 GHz and provides a communication blocking range of up to 16 kilometers. The system is capable of exerting influence within a 360-degree azimuthal plane and an angular range of 110 degrees, and its total mass is 120 kilograms.

The developers have provided for participation by only one operator to operate the system, while it supports remote control.

One system creates a protective dome with a radius of 3-4 kilometers around important critical infrastructure facilities or logistics nodes.

However, despite creating interference, the system has significant drawbacks. SpaceX instantly detects interference in communication channels, and radio reconnaissance satellites from partner countries detect powerful radiation from the system, thereby simplifying target detection.

“Flash” noted that the Ukrainian Defense Forces quickly find and destroy these systems using drones, which is why the invaders are forced to scale up their use, since they have no other means of countering Ukrainian drones that are destroying Russian logistics in the south.

The Russian manufacturer Russkiy Kupol (Russian Dome) does not advertise the system’s technical characteristics, but the cost of a single product is RUB 150 million.

On June 15, the 422nd Regiment of Unmanned Systems of the 17th Army Corps and the Special Operations Center “A” of the Security Service of Ukraine in the southern direction destroyed the EW station performing this jamming.

The published footage of the defeat showed six deployed system vehicles being hit by strike drones, with reconnaissance drones providing support.

The impact destroyed at least several vehicles, and most likely seriously damaged others.
