The US President has warned that Venezuelan fighter jets will be destroyed if they pose a threat to Americans.
The statement came after two Venezuelan F-16s flew near a US Navy ship in international waters.
The USS Jason Dunham destroyer did not respond to the flight of the Venezuelan aircraft.
The Pentagon called Caracas’s actions ‘extremely provocative’ and aimed at obstructing US operations to combat drug trafficking and terrorism.
The department warned Venezuela against attempts to block or interfere with similar missions in the future.
The incident occurred after the US military destroyed a ship from Venezuela with 11 people on board on Tuesday.
US President Donald Trump said that it had belonged to a drug cartel recognized as a ‘terrorist organization’ and had been transporting drugs.
Trump also posted a video on social media showing the destruction of the boat by an air strike.
At the same time, he emphasized that the United States did not plan to discuss regime change in Venezuela or an attack on the country, but would not allow criminal activity and smuggling to continue.
Washington is considering strikes against drug cartels in Venezuela.
The White House believes that such actions could be part of a broader strategy aimed at weakening the regime of Nicolás Maduro.
According to sources, the US strike on the Venezuelan ship on September 2nd was only the beginning of a larger effort to eliminate drug trafficking and potentially remove Maduro from power.
