Poland wants to purchase 1,400 high-precision GBU-39 aerial bombs and nearly 800 missiles for Patriot air defense systems from the United States.
The US Department of Defense’s Office of Defense Cooperation and Security and the Defence24 portal reported on this.
The purchase of these bombs and missiles is preliminarily estimated at nearly $6 billion.
As for aviation armament, on May 21, the US State Department approved the possible sale to Poland of 1,400 GBU-39/B Small Diameter Bombs (SDB) and related logistics and software support.
The potential sale also includes inert GBU-39 (T-1)/B training bombs with detonators, bomb mock-ups, technical assistance, training, publications, and other related hardware and software.
The entire project is estimated at a maximum of $180 million, but the actual cost will only be known after the relevant agreement is signed. The main contractor for the possible order will be Boeing, the manufacturer of the GBU-39.
The US Congress is currently considering a request from Poland to purchase 788 PAC-2 Guidance Enhanced Missile-Tactical (GEM-T) missiles for the Patriot air defense system, according to the Defence24.pl portal.
If approved, the cost of this order could be a maximum of $5.8 billion.
Poland’s request, which was submitted to the US Senate on May 15, concerns the purchase of air defense systems from 2018, including two MIM-104 Patriot air defense missile batteries worth $4.75 billion.
At that time, Warsaw did not order PAC-2 GEM-T anti-aircraft missiles with a range of up to 160 km for these systems.
Last month, the US also approved the possible sale to Poland of 400 AIM-120D-3 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles and related equipment and services with an estimated value of $1.33 billion.
Poland will thus become one of the few foreign customers for this modification of the American medium-range air-to-air missile.
