The U.S. State Department has approved the potential sale of 400 AIM-120D-3 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles to Poland, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced.

Poland would become one of the first international customers for the AIM-120D-3, the latest version of the U.S. medium-range missile.

The total value of the proposed deal is estimated at $1.33 billion. In addition to the missiles, the package includes related equipment, services, and support.

The final cost and terms will be determined through intergovernmental negotiations.

The Polish Air Force is also set to receive 16 guidance sections, anti-spoofing modules, and one missile for flight testing.

The order includes missile containers, support equipment, spare parts, consumables, accessories, and maintenance and logistics support, including software.

RTX will serve as the prime contractor.

According to Polish defense outlet ZBIAM, the intergovernmental agreement could be signed later this year.

“If purchased, these will be the latest AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles delivered to the Polish Air Force. They will (primarily) arm F-16C/D Jastrząb and F-35A Husarz multi-role fighter jets,” the outlet reported.

The AIM-120D-3 has a reported range exceeding 150 km. Poland’s Ministry of National Defense says the missiles will enhance its air combat capabilities and provide an advantage over potential adversaries. Defense portal Dziennik Zbrojny noted that deliveries under this contract, if signed in 2025, likely would not begin before 2030 or 2031.

In August 2024, Poland signed a separate intergovernmental agreement to purchase AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM missiles, with deliveries scheduled between 2029 and 2033.

In the case of the AIM-120D-3 version, Poland has a chance to become one of the first export recipients of the above-mentioned weapons. Previously, the sale of missiles of this modification was agreed for the Netherlands.
