Norway will provide approximately $306 million to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses and will participate in developing a joint missile defense system.
The Norwegian Ministry of Defense announced this.
“Ukraine’s fight to defend itself is also our fight. Ukraine faces Russian attacks every day. Russia continues to carry out airstrikes against civilians, Ukrainian cities, and critical energy infrastructure. While Ukraine is intercepting most drones and cruise missiles, it urgently needs stronger protection against ballistic missiles. This is one of Ukraine’s highest priorities. That is why Norway is allocating NOK 3 billion (about $306 million) to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense,” Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre stated.
Together with Denmark, Germany, and Canada, Norway will procure new missiles for Patriot air defense systems directly from the manufacturer.
The Norwegian Ministry of Defense also announced that the country will continue to support the U.S.-led Patriot Rapid Acquisition and Life-cycle Support (PURL) program.
Given the long delivery times for some of these missiles, Norway also plans to procure Patriot missiles from countries that already have them in service to ensure they can be delivered to Ukraine as quickly as possible.
In addition, Norway will join Ukraine’s initiative to establish a dedicated missile defense system and will allocate funding to support it.
It is likely referring to the FREYA initiative, which Germany has already joined.
Norway’s Ministry of Defense also announced that between 2023 and 2025, the country provided Ukraine with $3 billion (NOK 30 billion) in assistance to strengthen its air defense.
In addition, Norway plans to commit significant new funding to bolster Ukraine’s air defense in 2026, although the government has not yet disclosed the exact amount.
