The Lithuanian Armed Forces have received their first naval drones as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s military capabilities in the Baltic Sea.
General Raimundas Vaikšnoras, the Chief of Defence of the Republic of Lithuania, announced this.
“Longer tentacles in the Baltic Sea. ANBO is getting stronger. If you see these little guys, don’t worry – they’re friendly,” Vaikšnoras wrote.
In May, Lithuania established the ANBO unit (Autonomous Remote Unmanned Operations Unit), a specialized formation dedicated to autonomous and remotely operated unmanned systems. The newly delivered naval drones are expected to enhance the unit’s surveillance, reconnaissance, and maritime security capabilities in the Baltic Sea.
It will bring together all unmanned systems, electronic warfare equipment, and anti-drone capabilities within the Lithuanian Armed Forces.
Besides carrying out combat missions, the special unit will also test different types of drones and unmanned systems and set technical standards for the country’s defense industry.
Currently, the Lithuanian army has already trained over a thousand drone operators. However, the size of the ANBO unit itself will remain classified.
