Japan Scrambled Combat Aviation Due to the Threat of an Airspace Violation

Due to the threat of an airspace violation in the East China Sea, Japan urgently scrambled fighter jets from the Self-Defense Forces.

The Japanese Ministry of Defense reported this on its social media accounts.

“The Ministry of Defense and the Self-Defense Forces will continue to take all necessary measures around the clock, year-round, to protect our country’s territory and the peaceful lives of our citizens,” the Ministry of Defense stated.

On July 9, the Japan Self-Defense Forces released statistics on interceptions of foreign aircraft for the year 2025.

Japanese fighter jets conducted 595 sorties to respond to aircraft that entered the air defense identification zone without a flight plan and either failed to respond to radio inquiries or turned off their transponders.

Most of these incidents involved Chinese aircraft—366—while another 214 involved Russian aircraft.

By region, the Southwestern Command recorded the most interceptions—348 cases—while the Northern Command recorded 165, the Western Command 46, and the Central Command 36.

Japan is one of the countries actively working on the development of the sixth-generation GCAP fighter jet.
