U.S. President Donald Trump has renamed the commemorative days marking the end of the world wars.
In a post on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump announced that May 8 would now be recognized as Victory Day in World War II, and November 11 as Victory Day in World War I.
He claimed that no other country had matched the United States in strength or courage during those wars.
“Many of our allies and friends are celebrating May 8th as Victory Day, but we did more than any other Country, by far, in producing a victorious result on World War II,” the American president wrote.
He went on to say that the United States would resume celebrating its military victories.
“We won both wars, nobody was close to us in terms of strength, bravery, or military brilliance, but we never celebrate anything. That’s because we don’t have leaders anymore that know how to do so! We are going to start celebrating our victories again!”, Trump declared.
May 8 is observed in many countries as a Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation, honoring the victims of World War II. The commemoration was established by a UN resolution in November 2004.
The United States entered World War II on December 7, 1941, following Japan’s attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, more than two years after the war began with Germany’s invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939.
The Trump administration previously approved a $50 million direct commercial sale of weapons to Ukraine — the first such transfer.
The U.S. has also delivered a batch of F-16 Air Defense Fighter fuselages to Ukraine for disassembly into spare parts.
