Greek Patriot Expends Three Missiles to Shoot Down Several Drones Attacking Saudi Arabia

A Greek Patriot air defense battery deployed in Saudi Arabia shot down several drones using three missiles.

Greek newspaper Ekathimerini reported this.

On August 27, the Patriot battery fired three missiles at “several hostile unmanned aerial vehicles.”

The attack was fought off in coordination with Saudi Arabian air defense systems.

This was the fourth time Greek forces have used the system in the Middle East. The three previous incidents occurred in July.

On July 25, the battery successfully shot down two drones in two separate incidents in the Yanbu area. According to the Greek side, they were launched from Yemen.

A week earlier, Greek forces also used the Patriot battery to intercept two ballistic missiles launched from Yemen.

Greece deployed the Patriot battery to Saudi Arabia in 2021 under an agreement to help the kingdom protect its energy infrastructure.

Earlier, on August 19, it was reported that Greece was considering redeploying a Patriot air defense battery because of a potential threat of Iranian strikes against facilities in Europe used by U.S. forces.

The plan involves moving the Patriot battery, deployed on the island of Karpathos since March, to the area of a naval base on Crete.

It was also recently reported that U.S. forces in Europe face a “critical shortage” of Patriot interceptor missiles. This is largely related to the U.S. war with Iran.
