Germany will supply Ukraine with PAC-2 interceptor missiles for Patriot SAM systems from Bundeswehr stocks.
Boris Pistorius, German Minister of Defense, stated this in an interview with Suspilne.
According to him, the decision was made at a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in light of Ukraine’s urgent need to strengthen its air defenses ahead of the winter season.
“I have decided to urgently provide Ukraine with the much-needed PAC-2 interceptor missiles from Bundeswehr stocks, in parallel with the NATO summit,” Pistorius said.
“Today’s second step with our partners on air defense: Germany is ready to support Ukraine with missiles for the Patriots,” Volodymyr Zelensky stated.
In addition, Germany plans to supply Ukraine with AIM-9 air-to-air missiles.
Pistorius also announced that Ukraine plans to order several thousand additional IRIS-T guided missiles. Their procurement is expected to be financed through the European Union’s defense loan for Ukraine.
Germany will also join the City Dome project, which aims to strengthen the protection of Ukrainian cities against Russian drones and missiles.
According to Tagesschau, Berlin is funding the purchase of tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition for Ukraine’s long-range artillery through a British consortium.
Germany has stepped up cooperation with Ukraine amid the August 4 incident at Leipzig Airport, where an FPV drone carrying explosives crashed near a Ukrainian An-124 Ruslan aircraft.
After identifying the involvement of Russian intelligence services in the sabotage, Germany began considering providing Ukraine with data from the country’s BND intelligence service, including precise coordinates for retaliatory strikes against targets in Russia.
Germany’s Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) also plans to establish a comprehensive set of measures to counter Russian sabotage, including cyberattacks.
