The Freedom of Russia Legion’s unit, which is fighting on the side of Ukraine, together with Ferrata special forces conducted a joint operation using a Katran marine drone.
The Ukrainian Katran surface drone was used as a carrier platform for striking unmanned aerial vehicles. This tactic expands the capabilities of maritime operations and enhances the potential for strikes on remote targets.
The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine reported that the Freedom of Russia Legion’s unit had been involved in similar tasks.
This was part of a new phase of cooperation between Ukrainian forces and Russian volunteers who opposed the Kremlin.
“The first tests are over. The details will remain behind the scenes, but one thing is clear – the enemy can no longer feel safe even in places where he previously considered himself unreachable,” the unit said.
The operation involved close coordination between the participants. The Katran maritime drone went on a combat mission, carrying UAV strike missions.
At a certain point, the drones were launched to hit the Russian drilling platform.
“The Katran is equipped with special containers with lids in the bow, where vertical takeoff drones are placed. This design makes it possible to covertly transport and quickly launch strike vehicles.
A satellite communication terminal is located in the front of the drone. It provides stable control over long distances and allows for real-time contact with the command post.
The use of Katran demonstrates the development of new tactics for naval operations, where surface drones are transformed into mobile platforms for air strikes.
Earlier, Russian volunteers from the Russian Volunteer Corps were also trained to use these drones.
This year, the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine also disclosed the characteristics of the new generation of Magura V7 maritime drones, which shot down two Russian Su-30 fighters in May.
