Foundation of Staff Shortage: US Halts Law Enforcement Training in Favor of ICE

The Trump administration has announced the suspension of training at federal law enforcement academies for anyone not related to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

This was reported by Defense One.

According to White House officials, the decision was made to fulfill the president’s “urgent priorities.”

This is a large-scale recruitment of 10,000 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, the funding for which is included in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

This wave of recruitment is putting an unprecedented strain on the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), which trains more than 75 agencies.

The Border Patrol, the Transportation Security Administration, the military police, and the National Park Service are all taking classes there.

FLETC Director Paul Baker and his deputy Arianna Roddini explained that all of the center’s resources are directed to training ICE agents.

At the same time, they are considering moving critical programs to other sites and working with other agencies to find temporary solutions.

The government has allocated $750 million to support these efforts, but former and current officials emphasize: FLETC focuses on short-term solutions rather than developing long-term training opportunities.

To attract more candidates, ICE has introduced hiring bonuses of up to $50,000, eliminated age restrictions, and shortened the training period from six months to 48 days.

Such decisions may lead to a shortage of personnel in other federal law enforcement agencies in the United States.

It is unclear how Washington will deal with the critical shortage of specialists in other services that may result from this decision.
