EC Approves €6.1 Billion for Ukraine to Purchase Air Defense Systems, Missiles and Ammunition

The European Commission has approved a new €6.1 billion defense procurement package for Ukraine.

The EC published the information on its official website on August 24, Ukraine’s Independence Day.

The procurements include the supply of air defense and missile defense systems, missiles, ammunition, and radars.

The funds will be allocated as part of the €90 billion Ukraine Support Loan (UASL). Of this amount, €60 billion has been earmarked for Ukraine’s defense needs in 2026–2027.

The new procurement package adds to €16 billion in defense orders already approved by the European Commission. Of this amount, €8.35 billion has already been paid to ensure the delivery of essential equipment and weapons.

“Today, we have approved €6.1 billion for the air and missile defence systems, missiles, ammunition and radars that Ukraine urgently needs,” the President of the Commission Ursula von der Leyen said.

The majority of new procurements will be made from European defense companies.

The EC emphasized the need to increase supply volumes due to declining inventories, changes in priorities for orders already placed, and the expansion of production.

The EU attributes the need to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense capabilities to Russia’s increasing use of ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones. According to the EC, Russia carried out 376 missile strikes in July alone.

Under the UASL for 2026–2027, €30 billion in budgetary assistance and €60 billion for defense needs have been allocated.

Of the €60 billion in defense funding, €28.3 billion are planned to be allocated in 2026 to strengthen Ukraine’s defense industry.

Ukraine will be able to receive funds after submitting contracts signed with defense companies. The EC will verify that these contracts comply with the terms agreed upon by the member states and the EU.

Militarnyi has previously reported that the European Commission had allocated €3.47 billion to Ukraine for the procurement of drones, missiles, air defense systems, and fighter jets.
