The Danish Armed Forces have deployed the first group of newly drafted conscripts to Greenland.
The Danish Armed Forces stated this in a press release.
The conscripts will take part in operational duties for the first time during Operation Arctic Endurance while continuing their training and developing their military skills.
This is also the first time a group of conscripts has been deployed to Greenland.
During their deployment, the conscripts have been divided between two settlements: some are stationed in Kangerlussuaq and others in Nuuk. In both locations, they will perform key tasks as part of their operational duties.
Later, some of the conscripts in Kangerlussuaq will be sent to Nuuk, where they will take over the duties of their colleagues. At the same time, some personnel in Nuuk will travel to Kangerlussuaq.
The operational duties are part of the extended military service introduced under the 2024-2033 defense strategy.
The deployment of conscripts to Greenland also has political significance, as U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed his intention to annex the island, citing national security concerns.
The start of conscription was reported earlier this month. At the time, 1,600 Danes were drafted under the new 11-month program.
The recruits will undergo five months of basic training, followed by six months of combat service.
The Danish Armed Forces are also introducing new conscription tracks, including a drone platoon within the Special Operations Command of Denmark.
Denmark’s conscription system operates on the basis of a lottery among all healthy young people who have reached the age of 18.
At the same time, conscription has consisted almost entirely of volunteers for many years, with the lottery used only to fill remaining positions.
