The Czech Republic prepares to hand over to Ukraine a modern Earth observation satellite capable of operating in all weather conditions and at any time of the day.
The Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that this project emphasizes the high level of technological development of Czech companies and at the same time demonstrates continued support for Ukraine.
“This is evidence not only of the Czech Republic’s technological excellence in the complex field of space technology, but also a confirmation of our solidarity with the Ukrainian people,” the Czech Foreign Ministry said.
The Czech Ministry of Transport clarified that the project will be launched in the coming months, and the satellite is expected to be launched within a year.
The Czech Republic will be the first country to provide Ukraine with this type of assistance, setting a unique precedent in the field of space partnership between European countries.
Leading Czech companies with experience in building small spacecraft are involved in the development and production of the satellite. Their technologies have already been used in international space missions.
The new satellite will be equipped with a combined surveillance system that includes radar imaging (SAR), optical and radiation detection, and radio frequency spectrum monitoring. This will make it possible to observe the Earth even at night or in unfavorable weather conditions.
In the future, the satellite may become part of a future constellation of satellites that will expand monitoring capabilities and improve the accuracy of the data obtained, the Czech Ministry of Transport noted.
The initiative builds on the Memorandum of Understanding between the Czech Ministry of Transport and the State Space Agency of Ukraine, which laid the foundation for joint projects in the field of space.
The project is being implemented as part of the Czech government’s program to restore Ukraine. It involves the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
“The transfer of the satellite is not only a symbol of our support, but also an investment in the future of Ukraine. We are helping to strengthen its digital infrastructure, operational sovereignty and resilience, which at the same time enhances the security of the whole of Europe,” emphasized Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky.
Back in April of this year, the newest Czech military satellite SATurnin-1 began transmitting its first images from orbit. The main instrument is a high-resolution telescope designed to take pictures of the Earth. It can create up to 100 images per day.
