On September 1, the Izhevsk Concern Kalashnikov announced the completion of production of the first experimental batch of new compact AM-17 automatic rifles chambered in 5.45 mm.
The manufacturer announced this on their official Telegram channel.
The weapon has already passed state and military tests, as well as trials in a combat zone, after which the design was refined.
The AM-17 will be produced to replace the AKS-74U assault rifles within the security forces, as well as the Armed Forces of Russia.
The rifle supports all types of 5.45 mm ammunition currently in service with the Russian military.
A key feature of the AM-17 compared to the AKS-74U is the extensive use of high-quality polymer materials, which has allowed for a reduction in the overall weight of the weapon.
The weight of the automatic rifle is about 2.5 kg, and its length when folded is less than half a meter.
The design also includes a Picatinny rail, which allows the attachment of various sights, flashlights, laser pointers, and other additional equipment.
The rifle uses a gas-operated system with a short-stroke piston.
The AM-17 is equipped with a 30-round magazine, a folding telescopic stock, and an ambidextrous fire mode selector.
According to the Concern’s representatives, the model is intended to serve as a basis for further modifications, including for the civilian market.
Kalashnikov announced plans for serial production back in October 2024.
