Late in the evening on August 17th, 2025, news swept across the internet that “Ukraine has unveiled a long-range missile called ‘Flamingo’ with a range of 3,000 km.”

Photos of two such missiles were published by photojournalist Yefrem Lukatsky, who captured them for the Associated Press.

His comments about the missiles were rather limited, but the main point was clear: this is already a serially produced product by the company Fire Point, which also developed and manufactures the FP-1 strike drones that have been successfully hitting targets on Russian territory.

He did not provide any further information, but the missile’s appearance alone can already reveal quite a lot.

The missile features an elongated cylindrical body, with the jet engine nacelle and its air intake located at the top rear section of the fuselage.

The missile’s main wing is rectangular and mounted approximately in the middle of the fuselage (a mid-wing configuration).

The tail assembly is X-shaped.

The missile is launched from a ground-based launcher mounted on a trailer, which features a guide rail allowing the rocket’s booster to pass freely.

Online, the photos of the Flamingo missile were immediately compared to the FP-5 cruise missile project Milanion Group.

We will not speculate, but will present its characteristics, which—based on visual similarities—give an idea of what the Ukrainian missile’s capabilities might be:

Operational range: up to 3,000 kilometers
Flight altitude: up to 5 kilometers
Payload: up to 1,000 kilograms
Maximum flight time: 4 hours
Maximum speed: 950 km/h
Cruise speed: 850–900 km/h

The FP-5 cruise missile has a maximum launch weight of 6,000 kg and a wingspan of 6,000 mm. It is guided by a protected GPS/GNSS CRPA system and an INS system.

Together with another Ukrainian-made cruise missile – Neptune, which in its extended version reaches a range of 1,000 kilometers – such weaponry could significantly impact the number and quality of strikes on military-industrial targets in Russia.

By the way, the previously unknown Flamingo missile was mentioned earlier as part of a German-funded package of Ukrainian strike drones. However, journalists from Welt referred to it as an interceptor drone, and it was likely about VB140 Flamingo.

Although, of course, with such a range, Russian Shahed drones (Garpiya and Geran drones) can intercept them directly at the manufacturing plants – in Alabuga and Izhevsk.

Ukrainian long-range drones are already reaching those locations, but their warheads are significantly smaller, so the production facilities have not yet been completely destroyed.

We expect that more official details about the new Ukrainian Flamingo missile and its direct use will be released soon.
