The United States and Iran are expected to hold an official peace agreement signing ceremony in Geneva on June 19, marking a significant step toward easing tensions between the two countries.
Ishaq Dar, the Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, announced this.
According to Dar, Washington and Tehran have reached a preliminary agreement after a series of diplomatic negotiations facilitated by several countries and international organizations. The next stage of the process will be a meeting between U.S. and Iranian delegations in Geneva, where the agreement is expected to be formally signed.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, described the upcoming ceremony in Geneva as an important diplomatic milestone and expressed hope that it would pave the way for long-term stability in the Middle East.
Pakistan stated that throughout the negotiation process it maintained communication with all parties involved and consistently called for restraint and the resolution of differences through diplomatic means. Officials in Islamabad emphasized that dialogue remains the only effective mechanism for resolving international crises and preventing further escalation.
In its statement, the Pakistani government also thanked the leadership of the United States and Iran for their willingness to continue negotiations and seek compromise solutions instead of pursuing further escalation.
The Pakistani side also highlighted the role of regional mediators.
Among the countries that facilitated the negotiation process were Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, and Egypt, as well as the United Nations.
Despite claims that an agreement has been reached, the parties still need to resolve a number of technical and political issues. For this reason, the negotiation process will continue even after the document is signed in Geneva.
The upcoming meeting in Switzerland could become the first official ceremony of this level between the United States and Iran after a prolonged period of confrontation and mutual accusations. Its outcome is expected to have a significant impact on the future course of relations between the two countries.
The current negotiation process has advanced much further than during previous rounds of talks held in Middle Eastern countries.
At that time, despite ongoing diplomatic contacts, the two sides continued to exchange strikes on military targets, shoot down drones, and carry out other hostile actions. However, there is still no certainty that the talks in Switzerland will not be derailed by another escalation of tensions.
