The “Ukrainian sea mine” discovered by Greek fishermen is actually a pressure accumulator from a 9M33 missile of the Osa air defense system, which is in service with Greece.
This was reported by Militarnyi following an analysis of the published photos.
On May 26, fishermen found an unknown object in a rocky coastal area in the north of the island of Crete, near the area of Saint Anthony.
Coast Guard representatives suggested that the find might be of “Ukrainian origin.”
However, it is actually the air pressure accumulator of a 9M33 missile. This is indicated by the object’s specific design, which is completely identical to a standard rocket component.
Such a battery powers the pneumatic actuators of the control surfaces and maneuvering systems during flight.
It is located in the nose section of the missile between the power unit and the radio fuse receiver.
Since the missile’s warhead is located closer to the center of the body, such components often remain intact even after detonation and are frequently found separately.
The device likely fell into the sea following training exercises involving the Greek Army’s Osa air defense system, after which it was washed ashore.
A similar incident has already occurred in Greece: a comparable component was mistakenly identified as a “mine” on the coast of the island of Rhodes in 2025.
