Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the President of Türkiye, warned that Israel could face possible military intervention during a speech at an international conference in Istanbul.

He said Türkiye could take action similar to its past operations in Nagorno-Karabakh and Libya. Erdoğan accused Israel of violating humanitarian norms in Palestine and Lebanon, according to The Jerusalem Post.

He emphasized that Türkiye must strengthen its defense capabilities to deter Israel. Erdoğan also criticized a recent law passed by the Knesset introducing the death penalty for terrorists, calling it a means of pressure on Palestinian prisoners.

Amichay Eliyahu, Israel’s heritage minister, called Recep Tayyip Erdoğan a “megalomaniacal dictator” with imperial ambitions in response to the threats.

The official accused the Turkish leader of hypocrisy, pointing to the presence of Turkish troops in Northern Cyprus and military operations against the Kurds.

Amichay Eliyahu also promised to submit a proposal to the Israeli government to sever diplomatic relations with Türkiye entirely.

To reinforce his position, he shared an image depicting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu planting a flag on the Temple Mount, while Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is shown in a humiliated position at his feet.

The current escalation followed a decision by a Turkish court to bring charges against Benjamin Netanyahu and 35 other officials over the interception of the Sumud flotilla in October 2025. The Istanbul prosecutor’s office is seeking long prison sentences for Israeli leaders over the military operation carried out in international waters.

In response to the court cases and criticism, Israeli ministers and representatives of the Turkish Foreign Ministry exchanged harsh statements on the social media platform X.

The Turkish side compared Benjamin Netanyahu to Hitler, while Israeli ministers Israel Katz and Itamar Ben-Gvir called Recep Tayyip Erdoğan a “paper tiger” and accused him of mass killings of his own citizens.
