A video of a rare British ground-based launcher for AIM-132 ASRAAM missiles was published online.
The video was released online.
The video captures one of the British launchers deployed in Ukraine, which uses AIM-132 ASRAAM air-to-air missiles.
Mounted on the chassis of a Supacat HMT truck, it performs the mission of a short-range air defense system. It is known to be used to intercept Russian cruise missiles and drones.
Three guides can be spotted on the launcher, two of which are filled with missiles. The footage shows the mast with the Hawkeye optical station located just behind the cockpit.
The system can operate autonomously without being tied to other systems thanks to missiles with an infrared homing head and a built-in optical station. However, it is possible that it can also receive third-party targeting.
In October last year, the channel of Mykola Oleshchuk, Commander of the Air Force of Ukraine, first released a video of an air target interception by this system.
It captured the missile launch and shots from the gunner’s workstation, which displays the image from the optical station.
According to some reports, the video featured the interception of a Russian Shahed-136 kamikaze drone.
The system’s detailed specifications are unknown, as is the range of the AIM-132 ASRAAM missile when launched from the surface.
However, comparing the AIM-132 with the similar IRIS-T missile, both of which have a range of 25 km when launched from an aircraft, we can assume that the system transferred by the UK is capable of intercepting targets at a distance of up to 10 km and an altitude of up to 6 km.
As previously reported, on January 30, the United Kingdom opened a tender for the procurement of equipment and services under the International Fund for Ukraine (IFU).
