Saab hands over new SIGINT-ship HMS Artemis to Sweden

Saab has transferred the Signals Intelligence ship HMS Artemis (A202) to the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), the press service of the company reports.

The new ship will be equipped with special equipment for reconnaissance tasks.

Saab was awarded a contract to design and build the reconnaissance ship HMS Artemis (A202) for the Swedish Navy in 2017. The hull of the Signals Intelligence ship was built in Poland at the Nauta shipyard.

HMS Artemis was ordered on 10 April 2017 and laid down on 19 June 2018.

The ship was launched on 17 April 2019. In November 2022, the Swedish Armed Forces announced the start of sea trials of the new ship.

Artemis was initially expected to enter service in 2020, but the developers faced unforeseen delays during the implementation of the project.

After the installation of special reconnaissance equipment, the ship will be transferred to the Swedish Armed Forces. The detailed specification of this ship’s systems is classified.

The only publicly available information says that the ship has a length of 74.6 m, a width of 14 m, a draft of 3.8 m and a total displacement of approximately 2,200 tons. Its crew will consist of 40 people.

HMS Artemis (A202) will replace HMS Orion (A201), which has been in service since 1984. The new ship is larger than its predecessor and improved in all aspects.

As previously reported, Poland has bought two reconnaissance ships for its naval forces, which are likely to be built on the basis of the project of this ship.

On November 25, Swedish company Saab announced the conclusion of an agreement with the Armament Agency of Poland.

This agreement is aimed at improving the capabilities of the Polish army in the field of obtaining intelligence based on the SIGINT-ship.

This class of ships in the Polish Navy will be called Delfin.
