The Japan Ministry of Defense has signed a contract to purchase interceptor drones from the Ukrainian company SkyFall.

This was announced by Japanese Defense Minister Shinjirō Koizumi.

He noted that the ministry is currently working to ensure their delivery as soon as possible.

“The Japan Ministry of Defense has already signed a contract to purchase interceptor drones from the Ukrainian company SkyFall. We are currently working to ensure their delivery as soon as possible,” the official said during a briefing.

The minister did not specify the model or variant of the Ukrainian interceptor drones that were ordered.

According to the Japan Ministry of Defense, SkyFall manufactures the P1-SUN interceptor drones in various configurations, including one equipped with an artificial intelligence module.

The company has also developed a version of the P1-SUN JetKiller with increased flight speed for intercepting Russian jet-powered drones.

In late September, the company released footage showing the P1-SUN JetKiller interceptor destroying a Russian Geran-5 drone.

Separately, during the press conference, Shinjirō Koizumi highlighted Ukraine’s experience in rapidly advancing defense technologies.

According to him, thanks to a rapid feedback cycle, new versions of drones with improved performance are released every two to three weeks.

The minister emphasized that Japan has much to learn from Ukraine in the areas of defense industry development and strengthening the industrial base. Read more about the topic in the article “Prospects for Japan’s Defense Industry and Its Cooperation With Ukraine.”
