The US has completed the full withdrawal of its troops and equipment from Syria, ending its decade-long military presence in the country.

The last US Army units left the Qasrak base in Hasakah province on April 16 and headed toward Jordan, according to Middle East Eye.

The redeployment across the Jordanian border was chosen for the safety of personnel and to avoid possible attacks by pro-Iranian militias in Iraq.

Control of the base was taken over by the Syrian Army’s 60th Division, which is primarily composed of Kurdish fighters from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Until now, these units had been the United States’ main partner in the fight against Islamic State militants.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry stated that the completion of the handover of military facilities reflects the successful integration of Kurdish units into state structures. Damascus is now assuming full responsibility for the fight against terrorism and the protection of its borders.

The troop withdrawal process intensified after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in late 2024 and the rise to power of Ahmed al-Sharaa’s government. In recent months, US forces have also handed over major bases in Al-Tanf and Al-Shaddadi to the Syrian side.
