Ukrainian MiG-29 Strikes in Kursk Region Stop Russian Advance Into Sumy Region

Ukrainian tactical aviation thwarted an attempted Russian attack on the village of Ryzhivka in the Sumy region.

This was reported by the Telegram channel Sunflower.

According to the report, Russian assault groups supported by drones attempted to advance from the border town of Tyotkino in Russia’s Kursk region.

Local Territorial Defense units detected the enemy in time and directed aircraft to the area where the assault groups and enemy drone positions were concentrated.

The strikes on targets in Russia were carried out by MiG-29 fighter jets using GBU-39 and AASM HAMMER guided bombs.

According to Sunflower, Russian forces attempted to intercept the bombs. In one case, they fired four missiles at a single bomb.

It is known that the 1427th Motorized Rifle Regiment of the Russian Ground Forces is operating in this area.

Overall, the situation in the area remains under control. Since the beginning of March, the front line near Ryzhivka has remained practically unchanged.

Earlier, on July 5, it was reported that Ukrainian aircraft began dropping aerial bombs on Russian forces in the center of the city of Kostyantynivka.

GBU-39

The GBU-39/B Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) is an American lightweight guided precision aerial bomb weighing 130 kilograms, with a diameter of about 190 mm and a length of about 1.8 meters. Its maximum range is up to 110 km when released from high altitude.

The bomb’s design includes folding wings that deploy in flight, significantly increasing its range.

When diving toward a target from high altitude, the bomb can penetrate concrete shelters due to its tungsten penetrator.

The detonation system allows selection between an airburst mode and delayed detonation after impact before release.

High accuracy is achieved through an onboard control system combining inertial navigation and GPS.

AASM

French AASM high-precision aerial bombs, like American JDAM kits, are designed to convert conventional Western-style unguided bombs into precision-guided weapons.

Unlike JDAM, French kits are equipped with an integrated rocket motor, which significantly increases their range.

Depending on the launch conditions, the AASM can strike targets at distances of up to 15 km when released from low altitude and up to 70 km from high altitude.

There are two main variants: the Hammer-250, designed for 227-kilogram Mk.82 bombs, and the Hammer-1000, designed for 908-kilogram Mk.84 bombs.

AASM kits can use different guidance systems, including inertial, GPS, laser and infrared guidance.
