The Patriot air defense system of the German army will be deployed in Poland for the sake of strengthening the country’s air defense.
The Polish authorities have approved deployment of German servicemen in the country.
The relevant documents were signed by President Andrzej Duda.
About 400 servicemen of the Bundeswehr will arrive in Poland to operate and maintain the Patriot air defense systems.
Under the decision of the Ministry of Defense of Poland, Bundeswehr troops will be stationed in the Lublin Voivodeship near the border with Ukraine.
Their arrival is expected as early as next week.
The placement of the Patriot air defense system and German servicemen is agreed with the Operational Command of the Polish Army in consultation with the leadership of the Ministry of Defense.
Respective working groups have already arrived in Poland from Germany and are now completing final preparations for the arrival of the main forces who will service the launchers and associated systems of the air defense system.
Germany made the decision to provide Poland with Patriot air defense systems, together with military personnel to operate them, in response to a missile landing on the Polish village of Przewodów in November 2022.
During the Russian missile attack on Ukraine, wreckage of one of the missiles landed on the territory of Poland resulting in the death of two people.
Last December, the U.S. Department of Defense officially announced that Ukraine would receive one battery of the Patriot air defense system with missiles. The Ukrainian military will begin training with the Patriot air defense system next week.
As previously reported, at the beginning of 2023 it became known that Germany would also transfer to Ukraine a battery of the Patriot air defense system, following the United States.
