Mercedes-Benz plans to cooperate with Munich-based startup Tytan Technologies, which develops drones.
As part of the cooperation, the partners intend to jointly develop an air-defense system based on G-Class vehicles, Spiegel reports.
The companies plan to sign a memorandum on June 10 during the International Aerospace Exhibition (ILA) in Berlin.
The central element of the cooperation will be the development of an air-defense system called Drone Defender.
The project’s main goal is to protect critical infrastructure in Germany from enemy drones, but the system could also be used in combat zones.
The basic platform for deploying the system will be G-Class SUVs equipped with Tytan Technologies’ radar systems and interceptor-drone launchers.
At the same time, the launchers can be removed from the vehicles for stationary deployment.
The developers also plan to operate the system in units, with Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans serving as mobile command posts for drone control.
Tytan Technologies was founded in late 2023 by Balazs Nad and Batuhan Yumurtachy, graduates of the Technical University of Munich.
The company already holds a Bundeswehr contract for concepts to protect military facilities and supplies interceptor drones to Ukraine.
To date, the startup has attracted around €46 million in funding from European investors, including the NATO Innovation Fund, Lakestar, and Magnetic.
This summer, Tytan Technologies plans to open a new factory in Munich, aiming to reach production of up to 3,000 drones per month by the end of the year.
