The Swedish government has purchased RBS 70 and Tridon air defense systems for Ukraine for $113 million.

This was reported by Omni with reference to the ruling parties in SvD Debate.

The transferred systems should improve air defense capabilities, primarily against small air targets such as attack drones and cruise missiles.

In addition, Sweden will provide anti-aircraft missiles of the same type that Ukraine already uses, as well as anti-aircraft equipment used by the military on the front line, as part of international cooperation.

The Ukrainian Defense Forces already have RBS 70 systems, and the procured Tridon Mk.2 systems are a new development of the Swedish company BAE Systems AB (the Swedish branch of the British BAE Systems), which was presented in June 2024.

The new anti-aircraft gun system will use the proven Bofors 40 Mk.4 40 mm gun, which has a 100-round power supply system. The gun itself is mounted on a civilian Scania truck with a 6×6 wheel configuration, which allows for rapid deployment using public roads.

In addition, due to certain modifications, the module can be mounted on any other truck that meets the requirements for load capacity and dimensions.

The cannon provides a maximum range of up to 13 km, and with the use of programmable Bofors 3P shells, it allows for high accuracy destruction of air targets.

The maximum rate of fire is 300 rounds per minute, which, taking into account the powerful proximity fuse shells, provides a large area of dispersion of the destructive elements.

For targeting and firing, an optical station is installed above the module, which provides visual detection and tracking of targets. The use of a thermal imaging channel allows the system to destroy airborne targets both day and night and in bad weather.

As for the RBS-70 air defense system, it is designed to destroy low-flying targets and provides interception at ranges up to 5000-8000 meters and at altitudes up to 3000-5000 meters.

The RBS-70 is operated by three servicemen: an operator, a loader and a commander. The launcher weighs 35 kilograms and is equipped with an optical sight and thermal imager. The weight of the anti-aircraft missile in the transport and launch container is 24 kg. The total weight of the system is about 100 kg, which makes it impossible to launch from the shoulder. The deployment time of the system is 45 seconds, and reloading can be performed in less than 5 seconds.

The missile is guided by a laser beam, which ensures high accuracy and does not react to aircraft thermal and dipole traps. The maximum flight speed of the missile is about 2000 km/h.
