A new submarine pier has been officially opened at the naval base in the Swedish city of Karlskrona.

Martin Get, a representative of the Karlskrona naval base, announced the facility’s commissioning in comments to local media, reports SVT.

The new pier took a year and a half to build and was constructed using technologies adapted for modern submarines currently entering service with the Swedish Navy.

Martin Get noted that the facility will be able to accommodate not only Swedish vessels but also ships from NATO allies.

Karlskrona has served as the main base of the Swedish Navy since its founding in 1680. Submarine forces have been based here for over a century, starting with Sweden’s first submarine, the Hajen, in the early 20th century.

Currently, the base is home to the 1st Submarine Flotilla of the Royal Swedish Navy.

Saab previously received a new order from the Defense Procurement Agency to complete the production of two Blekinge-class (A26) submarines.

These submarines are being built in Karlskrona. They are designed for a wide range of missions and will form the backbone of Sweden’s submarine fleet.
