SSU Struck Russian Black Sea Fleet’s Project 775 Large Landing Ships ‘Yamal’ and ‘Azov’ in Crimea

Fighters from the SSU’s ‘Alpha’ Special Operations Center struck three Russian military ships, a radar station, and an oil depot in the temporarily occupied Crimea.

This was reported by the press service of the Security Service of Ukraine.

According to the press service, as a result of a comprehensive operation, the Russian Navy’s Project 775 large landing ships ‘Yamal’ and ‘Azov,’ as well as another military ship of an unidentified type, were damaged. The security service also reported the likely destruction of the Project 21980 anti-sabotage boat ‘Grachonok.’

In addition, SSU Alpha drones damaged the antenna block of the Dolphin communication system and the MR-10M1 Mys-M1 radar.

The MR-10M1 Mys-M1 is a mobile coastal defense radar designed for reconnaissance, coordinate measurement, tracking, and identification of surface ships and small air targets at high speeds in coastal waters at altitudes up to 2,000 meters.

It was likely used to detect Ukrainian strike UAVs and maritime drones in the waters around the temporarily occupied peninsula.

Fuel tanks at the Yugtorsan oil depot were also hit. This oil depot in Kozachya Bay is a strategic facility of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, which supplies fuel to ships and military equipment.

The facility specializes in receiving, storing, and transshipping light and heavy petroleum products. It operates as a marine oil terminal capable of receiving tankers and rail tank cars.

The ‘Yamal’ and ‘Azov’ amphibious assault ships

This is not the first time these ships have been hit in Crimea. On March 23, 2024, the Defense Forces carried out a successful missile strike using Storm Shadow/SCALP EG cruise missiles against Russian Black Sea Fleet facilities on the annexed peninsula. Among the key naval targets struck at that time were the large landing ships ‘Yamal’ and ‘Azov’ at Cape Fiolent.

According to assessments by Ukrainian military intelligence, the damage to the large landing ship ‘Yamal’ was critical: a hole in the upper deck caused the ship to list to starboard.

After that, one of the Project 775 ships, with its superstructure tightly covered by camouflage netting, was spotted undergoing repairs at the 13th Ship Repair Plant of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol. However, it is unknown whether both ships have been restored to full functionality.

Project 775 large landing ships — a series of large second-rank landing ships for near- and far-sea zones, built in Poland at the Stocznia Północna shipyard in Gdańsk for the Soviet Navy. Ships of this type, which are currently part of the Russian Federation’s fleet, form the backbone of its surface amphibious forces.

The ships are designed to land marines on unfortified coastlines and to transport troops and cargo by sea. They are capable of transporting various types of armored vehicles, including tanks.
