Spanish company Sener Aerospace & Defenсe has developed Europe’s first system for operating military convoys without human involvement.
Defenсe Blog reported the news.
The project was implemented within the COMMANDS consortium, led by Sener and financed by the European Defenсe Fund.
A demonstration, organized by GDELS Santa Bárbara Sistemas, showcased the system.
Autonomous ground vehicles carried out coordinated logistics maneuvers using navigation and perception systems powered by artificial intelligence.
One key feature is a “follow-me” mode in which unmanned vehicles mirror the movements of a lead vehicle.
The system, called Naviground, integrates with Indra’s combat management system installed on ASCOD armored vehicles and operates through NATO-standard digital architectures.
This enables data sharing, improved situational awareness, and coordinated command between crewed vehicles and autonomous platforms on the battlefield.
The goal of the project is to enable European armed forces to transport supplies in high-risk areas without endangering personnel.
A similar system was tested in Australia two years ago.
At that time, autonomous trucks transported supplies from Mangalore Airfield to Puckapunyal Airfield along the Goulburn Valley and Hume highways.
