Two divisions of the latest Sarma mobile high-precision multiple launch rocket systems have been ordered for the Russian army.
This is evidenced by Russian procurement documents that Militarnyi exclusively obtained.
The 300-mm Sarma MLRS is based on the KAMAZ-63501 armored chassis and was first introduced this year by Motovilikhinskie Zavody.
The documentation shows that in 2024, the Russian Ministry of Defense ordered 12 launchers and the same number of transport and loading vehicles for them.
One new rocket launcher costs the Russian army RUB 155 million (approximately $1.9 million). This was slightly more expensive than the Tornado-S system on a heavy wheeled chassis, which was ordered in parallel.
Transport and reloading vehicles on the same chassis are estimated at an additional RUB 64 million each.
“Under the influence of the firepower of the American HIMARS missile systems and their impact on the front, the Russian Ministry of Defense initiated its own project of a mobile high-precision missile system,” Militarnyi’s journalist Alexander Yan says.
To implement the Sarma project, they resumed work on the Kama MLRS project.
In 2023, the Russian media publicly reported on work on a promising 300-millimeter high-precision MLRS.
In addition, the system was to receive a new automated fire control and guidance system.
The first Sarma was demonstrated two years later at the Motovilikhinsky Plant facilities, where it was reported that the weight was reduced by almost 10 tons compared to the 33-ton Tornado-S.
The more compact vehicle, equipped with a launcher reduced to six guides, is mounted on a four-axle KAMAZ-63501 chassis with an armored cab.
