The Peruvian Air Force plans to purchase six modern TPS-77 MMR radars produced by the American company Lockheed Martin.

The outlet Defensa reported on this.

The acquisition is part of a program aimed at restoring and strengthening the country’s air surveillance and control capabilities, covering both coastal and mountainous regions.

The TPS-77 MMR radars are three-dimensional surveillance and early warning systems equipped with an active electronically scanned array (AESA).

Each radar provides a detection range of up to 463 km, full 360° coverage, operates in the L- and S-bands, and includes identification friend-or-foe (IFF) capability. The system can simultaneously track up to 1,000 targets and operate at altitudes of up to 30.5 km.

The total value of the contract is estimated at between $260 million and $280 million. The procurement includes phased delivery – initially one radar, with the remaining five to be delivered in 2027, provided there are no delays.

The radar is mobile and can be transported by ground vehicles or aircraft such as the C-130 Hercules. Deployment takes 30 to 45 minutes, and continuous operation is possible for up to 48 hours.

Before acquiring the new radars, the Peruvian Air Force largely relied on outdated systems that no longer met modern requirements in terms of range, accuracy, resistance to interference, and integration with newer air traffic control and air defense systems.

Peru’s primary long-range surveillance radars have traditionally been the American AN/TPS-43 and its upgraded version, the AN/TPS-70, produced by Westinghouse/Northrop Grumman. These are mobile three-dimensional (3D) S-band radars developed back in the 1970s–1980s.

The acquisition of these radar systems comes after the Peruvian military selected the American F-16 Block 70 fighter jet.

The official presentation of the deal is expected in the second half of April, following the 2026 general elections. The total value of the procurement is estimated at around $7 billion.

The purchase is taking place against the backdrop of Peru’s anticipated designation as a Major Non-NATO Ally of the United States – a strategic status that provides preferential access to military equipment and specialized financing programs.
