Sources from Al Arabiya and Al Hadath report a possible extension of the 60-day ceasefire between Iran and the United States.
Iranian media outlets are also reporting this.
The memorandum of understanding signed by the U.S. and Iran in June, known as the “Islamabad Understanding,” expires on August 17.
No official details have yet been released regarding the possible duration of the extension or which provisions a new agreement might cover.
According to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei during a press conference on August 17, official Tehran has denied the possibility of extending the ceasefire.
“Iran does not make decisions based on warnings or deadlines. We were supposed to negotiate for 60 days on issues including the nuclear issue, but given the U.S. violation of the memorandum of understanding, there is no longer any question of a 60-day timeframe,” Baghaei said.
U.S. forces have significantly depleted their air defense stocks amid the war with Iran. In particular, the number of missiles for Patriot systems has fallen to fewer than 1,000, while the stockpile of THAAD interceptors has dropped to approximately 250.
On June 26, the United States carried out strikes on targets in Iran in response to an attack on the Singapore-flagged civilian vessel M/V Ever Lovely in the Strait of Hormuz.
On July 23, the U.S. Air Force deployed a B-1B Lancer strategic bomber to strike Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targets in Iran.
On July 28, Iran launched several ballistic missiles as part of a “surprise attack” on U.S. forces in the region, which were successfully intercepted by U.S. air defenses.
