Maiachnia for Navigation in Black Sea: Ukraine Creates Radio Beacon Network for Drones

Ukraine has implemented the Maiachnia project, aimed at enabling navigation and precise positioning of drones in the Black Sea when satellite communication is unavailable.

This was revealed by Kyrylo Liukov, head of the unmanned technologies department at the Serhiy Prytula Charity Foundation, in his column for RBC-Ukraine.

When operating at considerable distances from the shore, operators lack ground-based reference points such as tall structures or terrain features. This significantly complicates route planning and the return of assets in the event of active countermeasures by enemy electronic warfare systems.

At the end of last year, at the initiative of the Foundation, the 12th Special Operations Detachment, and the Techno Taras company, the deployment of an autonomous radio beacon network based on the Skyline platform began.

Specialized equipment was arranged along the Black Sea coast, from Ochakiv to Izmail.

The radio beacons operate autonomously, are equipped with backup power sources, and are integrated into a centralized network.

This allows operators to precisely monitor the drones’ locations and ensure their return in challenging weather conditions or in the event of a temporary loss of communications.
