Lockheed Martin Unveils Nomad Drone Family, the Size of a Black Hawk

Sikorsky, a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin, has presented the Nomad family of multi-purpose unmanned aerial vehicles.

The Nomad drones are equipped with a Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) system.

They are capable of vertical takeoff and landing, hovering in the air, and performing extended horizontal flight on wings, making them suitable for a wide range of tasks.

The aircraft can operate from both ground platforms and ship decks.

The Nomad series UAVs use Sikorsky’s autonomous MATRIX technology and an economical hybrid electric powertrain, while the larger models are equipped with traditional internal combustion engines.

The MATRIX system, developed by Sikorsky Innovations in collaboration with DARPA, is an open autonomous platform that can be integrated with both rotary-wing aircraft and fixed-wing planes.

It has already proven its effectiveness in areas such as aerial firefighting and cargo delivery.

The Nomad family is designed to be scalable – from small drones to models comparable in size to the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter. The company positions them as a versatile platform for both military and civilian applications.

In March 2025, Sikorsky successfully completed extended flight tests of the Nomad 50 prototype, which has a wingspan of 3.14 meters.

The company is currently building a larger version – the Nomad 100, a Group 3 UAV with a wingspan of 5.49 meters, with its first flight expected soon.

The scalable Nomad series is designed to perform reconnaissance, light strike, and logistical support missions in combat environments.
