Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has announced her resignation from her position in President Donald Trump’s administration.

Gabbard announced her decision in a letter posted on social media platform X.

She stated that she would step down on June 30, citing her husband’s serious illness. He has been diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer.

However, Reuters, citing a source familiar with the situation, reports that the resignation may not have been voluntary but rather initiated by the White House itself.

Trump publicly thanked Gabbard for her work and announced that her deputy, Aaron Lucas, would temporarily assume the duties of Director of National Intelligence.

Gabbard took the helm of the US intelligence community in 2025, despite controversy surrounding her appointment and her limited experience in the intelligence field.

Before joining the Trump administration, she was a Democratic congresswoman, but later changed her political affiliation and became an ally of the Republicans.

For Ukraine, Gabbard remained a controversial figure due to her critical stance on military aid to Kyiv and sanctions pressure on Russia.

Previously, she had also repeatedly come under fire for statements that opponents viewed as echoing Russian narratives regarding the war in Ukraine.

In recent months, her position within the administration appeared precarious amid disagreements with Trump, particularly regarding assessments of Iran’s nuclear program.

Gabbard’s resignation marks yet another personnel change within the US security establishment amid a tense foreign policy situation.

Her departure marks a change in leadership of the agency that coordinates the work of 18 US intelligence agencies and produces key threat assessments for the US leadership.

As a reminder, one of the most absurd communication blunders by the Director of National Intelligence was the exposure of a CIA spy in Russia.
