Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda stated that intelligence indicates that Russia is preparing provocations in the Baltic states to test NATO’s unity.
Nausėda also confirmed in an interview with BNS that Moscow may be preparing attacks on critical infrastructure facilities.
“We have received such signals from our intelligence services. They do not indicate a specific place or time, because it is simply impossible to determine. The other side may not have completed the planning process yet, and we may only know about the fact of preparation or a probable target,” Nausėda said.
“So yes, I cannot deny that we have such information and that we are talking about kinetic operations — not large-scale actions, but targeted kinetic operations that, with a high probability, could be directed against critical infrastructure,” he added.
According to Nausėda, Lithuania has recently strengthened the protection of critical transport and energy infrastructure in response to this threat.
He noted that the authorities are preparing for a wide range of possible attacks that could disrupt the operation of key facilities.
“Anything that can stop the operation of these facilities is important, since they are important not only in themselves, but also ensure the functioning of the entire system, especially our synchronization with the continental European power grid,” Nausėda emphasized.
NATO countries on the Alliance’s eastern flank have repeatedly warned about the growing risk of Russian sabotage and hybrid operations.
