Ukraine has chosen its main infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) for domestic production — the KF41 Lynx from the German defense company Rheinmetall.
According to Defence Network, the first Lynx manufactured in Hungary arrived in Ukraine at the end of 2024 for testing.
Last week, during a meeting in the Ramstein format, the defense ministers of Ukraine and Germany signed an agreement to establish joint production of the Lynx in Ukraine. Rheinmetall plans to open the plant by the end of 2025.
Although the exact number of vehicles has not been disclosed, Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger previously mentioned a possible contract for the supply of several hundred units.
The KF41 Lynx IFV combines the experience gained from the Puma and Boxer programs and was designed as a modular platform without limitations for customers.
The key feature is modularity: the hull and combat module can be quickly replaced using a crane. This allows the vehicle to be adapted for various roles – from reconnaissance to air defense, electronic warfare, or mortar support.
The KF41 Lynx was first unveiled at the EuroSatory 2018 exhibition. The vehicle accommodates a crew of three and nine dismounts, weighs up to 50 tons, is powered by a 1,140 hp engine, and can reach speeds of up to 70 km/h.
