A car carrying a Russian navy officer exploded on the highway in Sevastopol in temporarily occupied Crimea, killing him.

His legs were partially torn off, the Astra Telegram channel reports.

According to Baza, he was the Chief of Staff of the 41st Brigade of Missile Ships and Boats of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

The explosion occurred when the car was moving down Taras Shevchenko Street around 9 a.m.

Eyewitnesses tried to help the driver, pulled him out of the car, and handed him over to paramedics, but his injuries were incompatible with life.

According to eyewitnesses, a hole was allegedly formed under the bottom of the vehicle, which may indicate an explosive device.

Mikhail Rozvazhayev, the so-called governor of Sevastopol, confirmed the death of the Russian serviceman.

According to preliminary data, this is Valery Trankovsky. However, according to other information, it may be another person who previously held this position, Valery Tkachenko.

The 41st brigade of missile ships and boats of the Russian Black Sea Fleet (military unit 72165) has a permanent deployment point in the city of Sevastopol in temporarily occupied Crimea.

The brigade has two divisions: The 166th Division of Small Missile Ships and the 295th Sulinsk Missile Boat Division. Ships of both divisions participated in the aggression against Ukraine. In particular, in the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Since 2022, a number of the brigade’s ships have participated in Russia’s full-scale attack on Ukraine, using cruise missiles from the Black Sea.

At the end of October, Russia started raising the remains of a large Project 775 amphibious assault ship in Feodosia, which is beyond repair. The ship was attacked by the Ukrainian Air Force on December 26, 2023, while docked in the port of Feodosia in temporarily occupied Crimea. As a result of a missile strike, a massive fire started on board, followed by a powerful explosion.
