Russian intelligence services tracked Ukrainians in India and shared details of their movements with local law enforcement.

According to DW, Indian authorities accuse the Ukrainians of having ties to armed groups in the border region. Those detained are also suspected of using drones or supplying technical equipment.

In addition, they are accused of violating immigration laws, including illegally staying in a zone closed to foreigners and possibly crossing the border with Myanmar without proper authorization.

India’s National Investigation Agency told the German media that law enforcement had been tracking the group for three months, and that Russia provided information about their movements.

This has sparked outrage at the Ukrainian Embassy in India.

Diplomats pointed to the “possible commissioned and politically motivated nature of the case.”

In March 2026, six Ukrainians and one U.S. citizen were arrested in India. They were detained at airports in Delhi, Kolkata, and Lucknow.

According to the Indian side, the detainees had spent an extended period in the northeastern state of Mizoram, near the border with Myanmar.

Amid this, serious allegations have also been raised about possible involvement in terrorist activities. However, authorities have not yet presented any public evidence to support these claims.

According to the agency, the detainees are allegedly involved in the illegal “import of large batches of drones from Europe to Myanmar via India” for the needs of “ethnic armed groups.”
